Part 141 Flight School
Part 141 is a section of the U.S. Code of Federal
Regulations (CFRs) Title 14 which regulates the
structure and operation of FAA-registered flight
schools. In order to become FAA-approved under Part
141, a flight school must meet certain requirements
and submit its curriculum to the FAA for review and
approval. Part 141 approved schools are subject to
regular audits by the FAA and must meet minimum pass
rates on the FAA practical exams.
Part 61 Flight School
Flight schools are not required to register with the
FAA. FAA-Certificated Flight
Instructors may operate under CFR Part 61 and
develop and use their own training programs, and may
teach per any schedule mutually agreed to with
students. Part 61 Flight Schools instruct to meet
the same pilot certification standards as Part 141
schools, but can operate with more flexibility, and
often are a better option for part-time students,
and those students that want to be able to choose
their own instructor.
